This summer, thanks to the NHL and NHLPA Industry Growth Fund grant, the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation (WJTNF) is sending 360 Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy (WJHA) students to the first WJHA Summer Camp. Over the course of July, students ranging in age from 7-16 years old, from the WJHA’s 17 participating schools will enjoy a unique camp experience.

The WJHA Summer Camp consists of a half day at the MTS Iceplex practicing their hockey skills, and half a day at Camp Manitou for an outdoor education experience. The hockey portion of camp will include an on ice session, a classroom session and a dry-land training session. While the other half of the day, campers will try their hand at Camp Manitou’s activities.

This amazing camp experience is provided at no cost to the students, and allows the WJHA to further their commitment to be a support for the students year round.

“Being able to spend time with the kids in the summer and being with them when they try something for the first time strengthens our relationship with the students and allows for the type of dialogue needed to be able to help these kids in all aspects of their life as they grow up with the WJHA.”
Corey Coker – Manager, Marketing & Academic Performance, WJHA

Two of the WJTNF newest full time members, Cheyenne Davis and Alex Kampen, are taking the lead running the WJHA Summer Camp.

The on-ice training will focus on hockey skill development and games, the dry-land training centers around team building games and introduces students to ways of taking care of their body through proper warming-up, training and stretching. The classroom session will continue along with WJHA after-school curriculum teaching campers important character traits and behaviors, as well as introducing them to sports science and nutrition information.

The half day at Camp Manitou will allow the students the opportunity to be outside, have fun and try camp activities like archery, wall climbing, zip line, fishing, swimming and many more fun activities.
