The Winnipeg Jets hockey Academy (WJHA) is in full swing after the holiday break. This year the WJHA has expanded to include 3 new classes to the core day program, 8 new classes to the After School program, and sponsor in 50 students into minor hockey.

The after school component includes floorball which is a type of floor hockey with five field players and a goalkeeper on each team. WJHA students also have the opportunity to be involved in special events like the Santa Claus Parade, the Grey Cup, RBC Sports Day in Canada, and the Jets Skills Competition.

A highlight this year has been the WJHA minor hockey teams. The two teams consist of boys and girls, in grades 4 & 5 from the various schools in the WJHA. The teams played in the Winnipeg Jets Challenge Cup over the holiday break. For most of the athletes this was their first experience playing in a tournament. Although there were some early games, the kids loved the atmosphere! The boy’s team had a record of 2-1-1! The girl’s team won their first ever game on Christmas Eve and finished the tournament with a record of 1-3!

The remainder of the 2015-16 season should be an exciting time. The WJHA will soon start inter-school games while the after school program kicks into high gear in 2016 with numerous field trips and guest speakers.
