It was a sunny Sunday afternoon when the puck dropped for the very first Bantam Bowl between two Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy (WJHA) minor teams at Camp Manitou’s outdoor rink on November 24.

To mark the inaugural outdoor league game between WJHA Bantam White and WJHA Bantam Blue, True North Youth Foundation (TNYF) Executive Director, Dwayne Green participated in a ceremonial puck drop, adding another element of excitement for players.

The inaugural event also brought out some special spectators.

“It is so gratifying, and to come out here and be able to see them play on outdoor ice on a beautiful Sunday afternoon the way the game was originally played,” said Mark Chipman, TNYF Board Chair. “It’s hard to put into words…it sure is cool and fun to watch.”

Team WJHA White was the first to celly during the game. With a low pass from teammate Paul, Mohammed scored the first-ever outdoor goal and team WJHA White battled to keep the win against team WJHA Blue with a final score of 4-3. Both teams knew, win or lose they were a part of a historic event for the TNYF.

The game also celebrates the continued growth of the WJHA minor program, which started with only one female and one male team in 2015. WJHA Bantam White and Blue are among eight WJHA minor teams involved in community hockey this season.

The TNYF appreciates the consideration with Hockey Winnipeg to make the Bantam Bowl a reality and looks forward to future WJHA minor face-offs at the Camp Manitou rink.
